The residential building code is not clear as to the minimum size a masonry pier can be in a crawl space. Some contractors will say 16" x 16" and some say 8" x 16". I have seen one house where the pier was made of 1/2 blocks making it 8" x 8". Where is the code reference? Since the piers are very short (4 to 5 blocks high) all configurations will work by calculation but architects and contractors do not know how to determine capacity. Do you have a guideline?
